Helping a Bedridden Loved One Start Moving Again

When someone has been in bed for weeks, getting them moving feels impossible. Here's how safe progress actually begins.

When an illness or injury has kept someone in bed for weeks, watching them struggle to sit up or stand can be frightening. Families often wonder whether their loved one will ever walk again. In many cases the answer is yes — but the path there starts far smaller and gentler than most people expect.

Start where the body is today

The first step isn't walking. It isn't even standing. For someone who has lost significant strength, progress begins with small, safe movements done right in the bed or a chair:

  • Ankle pumps and gentle leg movements to wake up the muscles and circulation
  • Rolling side to side and practicing sitting up at the edge of the bed
  • Seated movements for the arms, shoulders, and core
  • Supported standing — even for a few seconds at a time — once it's safe

Each of these is a real milestone. Built consistently, they become the foundation for transfers, standing, and eventually walking.

Protect against setbacks

The biggest risks in early recovery are doing too much too soon and doing nothing at all. Both stall progress. A steady middle path — small efforts, frequent rest, gradual increases — is what moves someone forward without flare-ups. Pay attention to skin comfort, fatigue, and mood; recovery is physical and emotional at once.

How families can help between visits

  • Encourage the small movements daily, and celebrate them — momentum matters.
  • Keep water and good nutrition within reach; muscle can't rebuild without fuel.
  • Make the path to the bathroom and chair clear and safe.
  • Keep the person socially engaged; isolation slows recovery.

You don't have to do it alone

Rebuilding from a very low baseline takes know-how and patience. In-home movement support can start at the bedside, guide each safe next step, and coach the family along the way — working alongside the person's medical team, never in place of it.

GrassROOTS Mobility provides in-home movement, fitness, and wellness coaching. We are not a medical, nursing, or licensed physical therapy provider, and our services are not a substitute for medical care. We work alongside your doctor and care team.
